Interaction program on election reform with Provincial level Stakeholders at Janakpur

The Nepal Law Society (NLS) and the International Foundation for Electoral System (IFES) have launched a project on Electoral Legal Reform in Nepal for sustainable and inclusive democracy from July, 2018 in order to support the reform process in electoral laws and their integration. The project aims to support the electoral legal reforms in electoral legal reforms by standardizing and consolidating the election acts in line with the constitution and international standards and to support the inclusive electoral governance through the activation of dialogue forum. As part of the project, the NLS in coordination with the ECN and the parliament prepared a mapping report, on the needs for election reform and integrated law. Based on the mapping report, the project identified five major issues for provincial consultations. The feedbacks received from such consultations will be used in producing the integrated law. Such consultations are being held in all seven provinces. First consultation was held in Pokhara of Gandaki Province and Butwal of Province number 5 and Surkhet of Karnalin province. The fourth and the final consultation was held on 19 March 2019.

Mr. Ishwari Prasad Paudyal, Commissioner, ECN chaired the program. Ms. Prema Thapa, Senior Program Officer, Nepal Law Society welcomed the participants. She gave a brief introduction of the NLS and its work since its establishment. She also shared the work of Civic Initiative Centers (CICs) and their work in the provinces. She also shared NLS ongoing programs to support the law making, capacity development and judicial reforms. She highlighted on how NLS has been working for a better electoral system in Nepal through research and election observation. She also mentioned that the electoral reforms are carried out regularly throughout the world to better reflect peoples' desire and aspirations.
